Place of event: Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro has been recently selected to be the host city of the 2016 Olympics and Para-Olympics. It will be the first time the Games will be held in South America.
The announcement was made on October 2nd in Copenhagen, Denmark, by Jacques Rogge, the IOC president. Rio de Janeiro has defeated great competitors such as Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago, after an outstanding presentation by its official and passionate committee.
The Cariocas celebrated all day long and we all are extremely happy that Rio was finally
chosen to host the Olympics. A huge stage in Copacabana Beach had been built with a big screen next to it, so that everybody could see the announcement live whilst enjoying free concerts sponsored by the City Hall. Over 200,000 people attended the day-long party.
The historic Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics announcement is the 3rd victory in-a-row that the “Wonderful City” has accomplished lately. Brazilians are also proud that the
Corcovado Mountain and the Statue of Christ the Redeemer has been recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and Brazil will have the honor of hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the final match of which will likely be in Rio.
The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will happen in four main areas: along the beautiful Copacabana and the beaches of the south zone of Rio, in the Maracanã Stadium and
surrounding areas, in the lively Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood and in the bucolic area of Deodoro. They will all be connected by a new traffic system and a specially designed passageway to make transportation among them possible. Over half of the facilities for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were already built for the Rio 2007 Pan American Games such as the João Avelange Stadium that will host the Track & Field competitions.
The Maracanã Stadium will be the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and will also stage the football competition. The marathon will start and finish at the Sambadrome, known to be the home of the biggest show on Earth: the Carnival Parade in Rio de Janeiro. The sailing competitions will have Sugar Loaf Mountain as a backdrop as the sailors navigate through the Guanabara Bay.
A whole new complex will be developed in the Barra da Tijuca area, which will host around 50% of the competitions and the Athletes Village, breathing new life into the young neighbourhood.
A total R$28 billion is expected to be spent to make the Olympic project possible in Rio de Janeiro.
A total of 40,000 rooms will be available to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over 50 new hotels in Rio de Janeiro have confirmed their support to increase the number of accommodations in Rio. Also cruise ships will serve as extra accommodation options for the guests of the Games in a revitalized area of Rio de Janeiro port. There will be a new line of funding to that will benefit the Rio de Janeiro Hotel sector. The total amount may reach USD160 million to reform and expand the Rio 2016 Olympics Hotels.
